Tower-one word essay

We were given an assignment to write an essay, two to three paragraphs, about one word.  The word that I chose was tower.

TOWER

A tower is tall such as a sky scraper.  A tower can be as high as the clouds.  towers are as stable as mountains.  Towers are made up of rocks, boulders and steel.  Towers are history made to last for ever.  Towers are strong and invincible.  Towers are formidable and big.  Towers are made to be everlasting.  Towers are dangerous and are not meant to be climbed.  Webster describes a tower as " a high slender building or structure" "Rise, aloft, stand high".

Historically, towers are giant stone/brick structures.  They are typically pointed.  They represent defensiveness or blocking of something.  There are different types of towers. One can be so tall that they tower over another person.  They can be found on castles an other medieval structures.  Many land marks in modern structures are towers such as the Leaning Tower of Pizza, the Eiffel Tower in France and even the Empire state building in New York is a tower.  Typically they are tall and thin but, they don't have to be.

In Ypsilanti, there is this one stone and brick structure that rises high above the city known as the water tower.  It was built back in the 1800's as a reservoir for the cities water supply.  It is now a historical land mark ;and can be seen from any point in the city.

Businesses have been named after this structure such as the tower inn bar and grill, the tower market.  I grew up in close proximity to this structure and I saw it every day.  When ever I was out side of the city and was coming home.  I always new that I was close when I could see the top of this structure day or night.  The top of this tower is aluminated at night and can be seen for miles.

The trouble that I have with writing

I have a lot of trouble writing anything.  my mind simply goes blank and the words don't come to me, be it fiction or non-fiction or poetry.  I can't seem to come up with the words to express how I feel or what I am thinking.  My mind just goes totally blank when I need to come up with something for my classes.

Writing has always been a challenge for me. especially here in college were so much writing is demanded of us students.  I try to come up with different topics and titles for my works hoping that it will trigger something in my mind that I can put down on paper.

This class is helping me to overcome my writers block.  I start off by just writing sentences down and then just go back and fill in the blanks. This helps me to come up with something I can call good writing.

for my final writing assignments I am going back and revising some of my work that I have all ready turned in and make them better. Hopefully I will get a good grade.

Class Asighment

We were given three post cards in class.  We had to look at each card and write something about each card.

The first post card that I  received was a very funny card it reminds me of what I think of myself " A young man in a old mans body"

The second post card that I received reminded me of what  I should be portraying at this stage in my life.  I should be portraying a man with style, grace and diplomacy.

?This third post card that I received speaks to me about myself " I am not the average joe".

The Girl With The Blackened Eye

This story, which we are required to read, is a story about a girl relieving a horable time in her life.  She relives every horable moment.  She was kidnapped at the age of fifteen.  The man who kidnapped her ties her up and bruttlelizes her for days on end.

This story is relived by her when she is older but, is still painful to be remembering.  The man is a serial mas murderer.  she does what he wants her to do in hopes that he will let her go free at some point.

She talks about how she is in the moment and then again she is not.  She tries to blot out the  brutality that this man is putting her through hoping to find a way escaping, if she has the courage to break free.

He holds her captive for it seems like forever until he come across another unsuspecting victim.

This story is very suspenseful and full of horrible details of what this man has done to this young woman before he sets her free.

The suspense is this story grabs you the moment you start to read this story and it carries on through out this wonderfully written suspenseful short story

The Wallet

This short story is about an old man who is tiered of losing his wallets to pick pockets when ever he goes shopping at the mall.  He gets tiered of people picking his pockets so he comes up with a plan to get even with the pick pockets.  He stuffs a phony wallet with expired Florida lottery tickets, expired food coupons and a fortune from and old fortune cookie.

He puts the wallet in his back pocket to see what it looks like.  All is ago and his daughter drives him to the mall where at random he picks out a store to try his plan on.  wouldn't you know it some one picks his pocket as he is bent over trying to pick up merchandise that has fallen to the floor.

The thief is chased by a sales clerk and other shoppers in the store join in.  The thief gets caught, the wallet is retrieved.  The sales clerk tries to return the wallet to the old man but, the old man runs from the store, jumps into his daughters car and tells her to drive fast.

This was a funny little story that was an easy read.  It was all of three or four paragraphs long.  It is the kind of story that I like.  It was very descriptive, short, sweet and to the point.  There was no need to rattle your brain to figure out what the author, Allen Woodman, wanted you to get.

Servivers

I am reading the short story Survivors by Kim Addonizio.  It talks about two lovers who talk about dying from aids.  One wants to die first because he doesn't want all the drama that going to come from his lovers family if he goes first. He doesn't want to with his lovers parrot or his lovers family.  The father of his partner has issues with his partners sexual orientation.  He tried in his earlier years to beat the gayness out of him, which did not work.

The main character of this story doesn't want to deal with his partners mother because she would she would be kind but sorrowful.  She secretly blames him for the dilemma both men are facing at this time.  The mother's letters for the past seven years, had been shared with him.  He knew that the whole family would disapprove of the apartment and living arrangement that these two men had.

The main character in this story, at the end, wants to clean the apartment of any items that shows their sexual orientation.  He thinks about opening the birds cage and letting the it fly out the open window and join the other birds who are free.  He says with that last act of setting the parrot free he would then be completely alone.  He thinks to himself "dear God, let me die first, don't let me survive him".

I enjoyed reading this little story.  It was short, sweet, and to the point.  It had a beginning, middle and an end. I could follow along with the story line.  I could understand it.
